Founded in 1898, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was started by Frank Seiberling. It is the third largest tire company in the world apart from Bridgestone and Michelin. The company was not connected with Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber in 1839, although it was named "Goodyear" in honour of the man. The first Goodyear tyres became popular because they were low maintenance, and easily detachable.
